I am actually pretty interested in playing Free Realms. It’s maybe the first honest attempt by a big studio to create a solid F2P game. That’s both encouraging (hey, there must be viable income there) and discouraging (big studios drown out us little guys).
But it’s got some good ideas, and it diverges from the hardcore conventions quite a bit in some ways. For example, you can explore without having to fight unless you want to. I definitely find that sort of choice appealing.
So I was watching this video of the game, and noticed that you can change “jobs” at any time. Sound familiar? And they level up independently. Well, I hadn’t really mentioned that part about Roles, but there are skills for each one that you can improve independently.
I guess I shouldn’t feel disappointed, but I do. Well, at least now I know that the idea is solid, and I’m on the right track. There’s a positive spin.
Meanwhile, I’m continually working on refining my game engine technologies, coming up with new concepts to launch that are small enough to finish quickly and will inch me closer and closer to getting Lila Dreams back in production.

I feel I need to link another game that’s been out for awhile that also allows for multiple jobs. http://domo.aeriagames.com/
You have to level them up independently also. This is a concept that I am happy to see catching on with other games.
I wouldn’t say you have anything to worry about Jason,
Free realms has no style. It’s just worse than WoW combat with some worse than Second Life thrown in. Lila has that certain je ne sais.
Glad to be able to glean some lila info from this post however =P. I was worried you would lose your progress if you changed class so that’s a nice turn. A game I thought had quite an interesting combat experience system is another F2P,FlyFF by GPotato.
As you use attacks, you gain experience with them. A certain amount of experience in the first attack opens the option to use a second attack and on to a third in the same fashion. However, each attack can be used and leveled past the amount needed as a requisite. This allowed lower level abilities to still be used effectively at higher difficulties and in later game.
Just thought you might be interested to check it out.
Keep on keepin’ on Jason, We’re all very excited to see how Lila turns out!
Your game and their game (or games like theirs) do not target the same audience. Although both games share similarities, the way I see it, they have nothing in common. It’s interesting to know that Lila Dreams allows for changing jobs, but that doesn’t even enter into account when I say I’d like to play it. if the only way to level up in Lila Dreams would be to draw one thousand perfect circles on screen with a mouse, I’d still like to play it. I have no interest in playing Free Realms, or WoW, or that kind of games (I still respect their soulless work). I like Hollywood movies once in a while, but they are forgotten almost before the ending credits finishes.
I honestly don’t think any of the people hanging around here or future Lila Dreams players would compare Lila Dreams and Free Realms. Maybe they’d like to play both, but surely not one over the other.
While I was writing this, the very slow website of Free Realms opened. Well, you really have nothing to worry about. It’s Disney Channel. Classical, nicely done, fair budget, they hired good artists that know the trade, etc. Their game can be very nice, I do not intend to flame them, but how do you dare to even begin comparing this with Lila Dreams? It’s almost insulting for your game.
There can be no competitors when your work is what you really want it to be. An artist’s work can’t have competitors, by definition. Don’t worry, and good luck!
Still waiting eagerly for the first beta.
Hehehe, thanks for straightening that out Xannax. I just needed some perspective. I’ll try to be less myopic and whiny in the future.
I played both DOMO and FlyFF a while back, but didn’t get deep enough into them to analyze their mechanics much. Thanks for explaining those details, Sir Wamsly. It’s an interesting approach to something that is definitely a problem in many MMOs–useless gear.
So Jason,
Anything cool happen in lila town since the last time we talked?
Well, I’ve been off gold-farming and grinding for levels with a couple of non-Flash technologies. (Was that a geeky enough metaphor?!)
I’m having some thoughts about changing Lila’s presentation, but I can’t talk about it yet (and it’s certainly not a finalized decision at this point). If you follow my tech blog at all, you might already know one Big Idea I’m considering.
Sorry to be cryptic, I just can’t say a lot now, other than it’s going to be quiet here for a while longer. But some Really Cool Things are marinating so I can cook up a gourmet buffet of Lila Dreams when I get back to this full time.
Noooo, unity is cool and and all but please keep it side scrolling!!!
If this isn’t what you meant then sorry for the spaz haha >.>
I’m sure it will all turn out great in the end. I’m starting to get really hungry(if you’re aloud to use metaphors then so am I! =P)
The nice thing about 3d is that it doesn’t have to be one view or the other. It can be any view, depending on which one best serves the gameplay for a particular activity.
Touché my friend, touché.
I’m intrigued as to how you plan on implementing that idea. However 2d generally seemed to really suit how your concepts were looking.
Prove me wrong!
At the moment, the game is officially still Flash and still 2d sidescrolling, but the list of reasons to change that is very compelling to me. It has less to do with whiz-bang graphics and much more to do with versatility and making the game more accessible to play. *bites tongue before saying too much*
There’s still lots of experimentation and research to be done, though.

Free realms is very different to world of warcraft, it has mini-games and mario-cart style racing.
*hang on, just read a blog post*
i like the idea of the world changing with lila’s emotions, but i hate it when anyone critisizes something i like, so can we please just say that free realms and lila dreams are both great. please?????
