Mini Massively Multiplayer In A Flash

[This week I turn the blog over to our programming pugilist and technology architect, Neo, for an introduction to his world. --Jason]

dsc00899t.jpg While I don’t have the gift of the gab (or jabber) that Jason has, I will never the less try real hard not to bore anyone to death with sterile algorithms but instead regale all and sunder with marvelous tales of the trickery in the trenches of online game tech (and bore everyone to death with that instead).

I am where Jason’s dreams come to die, the graveyard for his creative darlings. Its up to me to push Jason and Greg to new levels of inspiration and creativity and then to murder their darlings by feeding them to the monsters of technical limitation.

But fear not, while we may not get to experience their bursts of illumination in their full spectrum, at least we will wring out every inch of what is technically possible.

Don’t read this as a lack of confidence, far from it, it is just that I am so blown away by the talent of these two lads that I wish I could transplant all their creations directly into everyones minds.

Now that I’ve thoroughly ingratiated myself with them I can get back to work on the tech so that I have something to say next week, same time, same place, same ole human race…

[Obligatory concept art image for the week is in the gallery.]

Don’t be so down on yourself neo ^.^. I am really looking forward to the innovations you produce to fit in with this excellent concept. At least you don’t have to worry about making it act like the real world :).

On a second note, that new art is just as gorgeous as all the others. Thats the second one in the swamp. Is the swamp going to be a central area or are your concepts for it jsut the best looking haha?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, Neo!

A question regarding to the concept art and the people or faces fused with the walls: in-game, might they be interactable, Or are they purely for aesthetics? Both perhaps?

As another thought, will NPCs in any way change at all according to Lila’s emotions?

SirWamsly, believe me, Neo is humbly under-representing his vast talent. He’s a few notches above the rest (as a programmer myself, I can say that with some authority).

The swamp is one of the places for which we have lots of finalized concept art. And I personally really love that scene, which is 100% from Greg’s fertile imagination. :)

r.Okamo, the Lila faces are not interactive directly, but they will change expressions to match Lila’s mood.

Some NPCs will also react to Lila’s mood in various ways. We’re going to try and have mood changes filter through as much as possible in the game.

LOVE IT!!!
This mood thing is amazing. I have a question about the whole crafting/growing thing though. Will the growing start from scratch in the garden or will it be more along the line of kill things, take their drops back to the garden, make things with those?

Also, how prominent of a marketplace concept will there be? Will we be able to trade our grown items and if they exist, our monster pieces?

Also one more thing haha. Is growing the only way to get items at this point?

Nice to meet you Neo :)
All you guys seem like a nice bunch of goofballs, and I mean that in the highest regard… heheh

Seriously though, the inspirational force that you guys are giving off is quite impressive. I anxiously await more details and info about the game (as well as the beta signup).

Everyone stop asking so many questions and start telling everyone you know about this game :)

Everyone, please do as kevbo requests in that last sentence in post #8. 8) But it’s ok if you want to ask questions. ;)
